Scanning,
Batch Scanning (Using IrfanView & HP ScanJet)
Required Items
- Irfanview software
available as a free download from the Internet, or Durell
- A scanner with a batch
feeder (e.g. the HP Scanjet 7450c combined scanner & 50 sheet feeder)
- A fast computer (e.g.
700 Mhz CPU or more with 128 Mb RAM or more, with a USB connector)
- Allowing 100 Kb per
scanned image, a 40 Gb hard drive should hold around 400,000
Load IrfanView
Free of charge, Durell will Email any supported customer a
copy of the “freeware” file called “iview333”. Copy this file to the Windows
Desktop of each computer. Then on each such computer, starting from there…
- Double click “iview333”
- Click “Next” on the
“Welcome” screen
- Click “Next” on the
“Version” screen
- Click “Next” on the
“Association” screen
- Click “Next” on the
“Ready to install” screen
- Click “Done” on the
“Installation successful” screen
Link IrfanView To Durell
On
each computer start Durell and login as normal, then from Durell’s Main Menu…
- Click “Set-up”
- Double-click “File
paths” in the list on the right of the “Set-up” screen
- Click the “Links, etc”
tab
- Click the “Browse”
button to the right of “Image scanning”
- Click the down arrow
button to the right of the “Look in” drop-down
- Double-click “My
Computer”
- Double-click your first
hard drive icon for C:
- Double-click “Program
Files”
- Double-click
“IrfanView”
- Double-click “i_view32”
- Repeat the above for
the line entitled “Image viewing”
- Click the two
tick-boxes for “Pass picture path” and “Use for previewing”
- Click “OK”
Set-up Client Folders
(Optional)
It
is not essential, but you may like to organise your hard drive into folders and
sub-folders for your scanned images. This will result in a sub-folder for each
client’s images held in an overall folder called “Pics” or “Scanned images”,
which itself may optionally be a sub-folder of your common Durell data. To do
this, starting from the Windows Desktop of any computer on your network…
- Double-click “My
Computer”
- Double-click the shared
network drive, probably for Drive F, or G or S, etc
- Optionally double-click
the Durell shared folder, probably F:\Imw-Data (to create a sub-folder of
Durell)
- Optionally double-click
the “Pics” sub-folder, probably F:\Imw-Data\Pics (to create sub-folders of
Pics)
- Click “File” at the top
left of the screen
- Click “New” on the
“File” menu
- Click “Folder” on the
sub-menu and a new folder called “New Folder” will appear
- Right-click the “New
Folder”
- Click “Rename” on the
resulting menu
- Press the “Backspace”
key once
- Enter the first
client’s name (e.g. “BLOGGS F” without any punctuation)
- Click on the background
anywhere beside the renamed folder
- Click “File” again and
repeat the sequence for the next client
- Create a folder for
each client for whom you will have scanned documents
Install HP ScanJet 7450c (with
50 sheet feeder)
- Install the HP software
before connecting the scanner to the computer
- You only need
the “HP PrecisionScan Pro 3.0” on the attached computer
- After installing the
software, switch off everything, then…
- Unlock the scanner
(switch at back, left)
- Connect the cable from
the sheet-feeder to the scanner base (back of scanner)
- Connect the scanner’s
cable to any of the computer’s USB sockets
- Power on the scanner
- Power on the computer
and load Windows, as normal
Scanning a New Batch of
Documents
Start
Durell as normal and select the client record, then…
- Click the green “W”
button to start the Document Viewer
- Click the “New scan”
button
- Click anywhere on the
“IrfanView” window to bring it to the front of your screen
- Click “File” at the top
left of IrfanView
- Click “Batch Scanning”
on the “File” menu, then for the first time…
1.
Enter
the “Output file name” as “Scan” (it will retain this setting)
2. Enter
the “Starting index” as “1” (it will retain this setting)
3.
Use the “Browse” button to find the client’s folder (see above
paragraph)
4.
Select
“JPG-JPEG Files” in the “Save as” drop-down (it will retain this)
5.
Click
the “Options” button
6.
Click
the “Save Quality” button and slide left to a setting of 50
7.
Click
“OK” on the “IrfanView Save Properties” screen
Note
that on subsequent occasions you will only need to do line 3
- Click “OK” on the
“Batch Scanning – Setup” screen
- Your HP “PrecisionScan”
software will now start automatically
- Place the pile of
documents in the sheet feeder…

- If not already set in
this way, adjust the HP “PrecisionScan” settings to…
1.
Output
= Greyscale

Resolution
= 100
3.
Paper
size =A4
- Click “Scan”
- Wait till all the
sheets have been scanned, then remove them from the scanner
- Click the cross in the
top right hand corner of “IrfanView” to close it
- On the Durell “Document
Viewer” click the “Find Scan” button
- Use the “Look in”
drop-down to find and open the client’s folder
- Double-click the file
called “Scan01”
- Click “OK” on the “New
Document Link” screen
- You have now completed
your batch scan – ignore the other files.
Viewing A Scanned Batch
On
the Durell “Document Viewer”, double-click the entry for “Scan01”
- Click anywhere on the “IrfanView”
window to bring it to the front of your screen
- To view the next page
click the “Right arrow” button, top centre of “IrfanView”
- To view the previous
page click the “Left arrow” button, top centre of “IrfanView”
- To make the image
bigger or smaller click the “Magnifying Glass” buttons
- To end viewing, click
the cross in the top right hand corner
