Overview, System Requirements

Minimum Single-User

1,000 Mhz or faster Pentium based PC with 128 Mb RAM (preferably 512 Mb), a CD-ROM and at least 2 Gb spare capacity on the hard drive. Microsoft’s Windows 98 or preferably a more recent version of Windows. You are also likely to require a Deskjet type of printer, an Internet connection and some kind of back-up device, such as a tape streamer or CD writer.

Minimum Multi-User

Each workstation as for a single-user, as above, but fitted with a network card and connected to a LAN switch (i.e. not a hub) with Cat 5 cable. The LAN switch should be connected to a server running a version of Microsoft’s Windows 98 or later. Preferably this will be a “Server” version of Windows, such as Windows Server 2000 or later, run on a stand-alone basis, though small networks can run on a peer-to-peer without a dedicated server.

Typical Capacities

Each workstation is likely to require around 50Mb for its Durell programs

The server is likely to require from 50Mb to 5Gb for data storage

If not dedicated, the server may double-up as a workstation and require capacity for that too
