Clients, Finding Records (The Binoculars Button)

You can use either the Binoculars button or the F9 key to find records. Starting from Durell’s Main Menu…

  • Click the “People” button
  • Over-type the current name in the “Search name” field with the letters “PU ” (i.e. type a P, a U then a space)
  • Click the “Binoculars” button, or press F9, and you should find a client called something like “PUDD P”
  • Click the “Next” button, or press F7, to find the previous record, alphabetically
  • Click the “Previous” button, or press F8, to find the next record, alphabetically
  • Click the “First” button, or press F5, to find the first record, alphabetically
  • Click the “Last” button, or press F6 to find the last record, alphabetically
  • Click the “Spectacles” button, or press F12 to switch to the scrolling view, then again to return

Using the function keys is quicker than using the mouse, though more features are available if you work exclusively through the mouse. To check these, starting from Durell’s Main Menu…

  • Click the “People” button
  • This time do not touch the search name
  • Click the “Binoculars” button, or press F9
  • Use the “Address set” drop-down to select “Suppliers” (N.B. near the bottom of the list)
  • Type DUR into the “Search value” field
  • Click “OK”
  • Note that not only have you found the record for “DURELL”, but you have also switched to the “Suppliers” address set
  • Click the “Open door” or “Exit” button, or press Esc to return to your previous address set and record
  • Click the “Binoculars” button again, or press F9
  • Leave the “Address set” this time, but use the “Order by” drop-down to select “Occupation”
  • Type ILL into the “Search value” field
  • Click “OK”

  • Note that not only have you found the record for “ILLUSTRATOR”, but you have also switched the search sequence to Occupation

Also note the “All” button at the top right. When you click this the subsequent search will be through all address sets, not just one, as shown below.

Try using the Binoculars button to change from “Individual Clients” to “Companies, Life & Investment”. Press the ESC key after each one to return to Individual Clients. Try it again to change the basis of search in Individual Clients from “Search Name” to “Birth Date”. Note how this field is then highlighted, and that your F7 and F8 keys will now find the previous or next record by birth rather than search name.
